Today's Viewers Are Less Forgiving of Amateur-Looking Videos

If you're of a certain age, you may have fond memories of those late-night TV commercials that appeared to have been shot on a five-dollar budget: a spokesman sitting on a stool or armchair, looking into the camera, and delivering his spiel in one shaky take (usually accompanied by some tinny music). A generation ago, these commercials conveyed a certain can-do spirit, and some of them probably had a decent conversion rate (that is, a fair number of viewers would dial the 800 number and order whatever product was being offered).

Those days, like it or not, are long gone. Even the cheapest commercials on the air today are an order of magnitude more expensive than those bare-bones productions. A viewer simply will not sit still for a  late-night ad that would have passed muster back in the 60's or 70's. Today, TV viewers and YouTube enthusiasts demand a certain minimum level of competency in the videos they watch, and one way to attain (and exceed) this minimum is to incorporate green screen video into your clip.

Why? Well, by using a green screen, you can give your video an “upscale” feel with a minimal budget. All you have to do is shoot or procure video that you project behind your spokesperson as he raves about your product or service. If you really know what you're doing, you can incorporate green screen footage to such good effect that a viewer may not even know that this technology is being utilized—the viewer believes that you (or your spokesman) are really on that beach in Bermuda and is all the more eager to give your product a try.
